A  U NIQUE  EXPERIENCE  **Visiting the pinnawala elephant orphanage is a unique experience . visitors can participate in the daily feeding . bathing and playing routines  of the elephants . the elephants are fed milk and fruits three times a day , and visitors can watch as the baby elephants guzzle down their  bottles of milk . the morning feeding time is 8.30 am to 10.30am  ** The highlight of the visit is the daily elephant bath  , where the elephants are taken  down to the nearby river called MA OYA for a refreshing dip. visitors can watch as the elephants splash around in the water , playfully squirting water at each other .there are  two bathing times starts around 10am and the evening bathing time starts around 2pm. the orphanage closes around 6pm and the visitors will not be allowed to  enter after  5 pm. šŸ’— šŸ’—

ABOUT THE ORPHANAGE

 PINNAWALA   ELEPHANT  ORPHANAGE  THE pinnawala orphanage was founded to care and protect the many orphaned unweaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forest of sri lanka  .  It was established by in  1975 by the sri lanka  department of wildlife  conservation .  on 31 august 2021 , a 25 year  old  elephant namedb surangi gave birth to twin male baby elephants at the orphanage . it also marked the first instance of  the  birth of twin elephants in SL after a gap of 80 years since 1941 . šŸ’“the purpose of the elephant orphanage is to help the orphaned baby elephants also the adult elephants by providing them helping hands . šŸ’—pinnawala elephant orphanage is one of  the favourite attractions for both locals and foreigners .  šŸ’—It is heaven for orphaned and injured elephants . the orphanage provides care and shelter to these majestic creatures .

AFRICAN  FOREST  ELEPHANT  The African forest elephant is one of the two living species of African elephants . It is native to humid tropical forests in west africa . It is the SMALLEST of the three living elephant species . Female elephants are social animals , living in herds with their relatives .Males usually live alone but sometimes form small groups with other males . all elephants need a lot of space , sometimes roaming over incredible areas to find enough food and water to sustain them .  But their habitats are shrinking . African elephants habitat has declined by over 50 %since 1976 , while asian elephants are now restricted to just 15% of their original range .  Add in growing human wildlife conflict in recent years and its easy  to see why elephants are under threat .

 Features of an Elephant,  Distinctive features of elephants include a long proboscis called a trunk,  tusks , large ear flaps , pillar like legs , and tough but sensitive grey skin . The trunk is prehensible , bringing food  and water to the mouth and grasping objects . Tusks, which are derived from the incisor teeth, serve body as weapons and as tool for moving objects and  digging. The large ear flaps assist in maintaining a constant    body temperature as well as in communication .
